見て、聞いて、声に出そう。

短い場面を一つ聞き、メモと想起練習に進みましょう。

飲み物が薄い、少し別の風味がある、一番好きな物にわずかに及ばない。英語で感想を言うとき、良い・悪いに理由を足せると伝わりやすくなります。

A drink can be too weak, have a small trace of another flavour, or come almost level with your favourite. Useful English reviews say why you prefer something, not just that it is good or bad. This lesson practises that extra detail.

trying every coffee shop in New York... (part 2)でSydneyが飲み物を比べます。2:57、5:14、11:42、12:12の短い部分を使います。点数は訪問当時の個人的な感想で、現在の店をおすすめする記事ではありません。

Sydney compares drinks in trying every coffee shop in New York... (part 2). We use short excerpts at 2:57, 5:14, 11:42 and 12:12. Her ratings describe her visit and preferences at the time; this is an English lesson, not an updated recommendation for those cafés.

Pace myself:理由と一緒に覚えるPace myself: a small verb with a clear reason

2:57では試飲がまだ続くことを自分に言い聞かせます。表現の後に、まだ飲み物があるという理由を聞きましょう。料理を何品も味わうときや、長い作業にも使えます。

At 2:57, she reminds herself that the tasting day is not over. Listen for the reason after the expression: more drinks are still ahead. The grammar is useful beyond coffee, for example when you have several dishes to taste or a long afternoon of tasks.

例文ではコーヒーを料理に変えます。なぜペースを調整する必要があるかも言ってみましょう。短い理由を添えると、目的のある表現として使えます。

The practice sentence changes coffee to food so you can keep the idea while replacing the objects. Say why you need to control the pace. A short reason helps the sentence make sense instead of becoming a phrase you repeat without a purpose.

状況から英語を思い出す

五つの料理を味わうので、最初に急いで食べすぎないようにしたいと思っています。

You are tasting five dishes and want to avoid eating everything too quickly at the start.

There are five dishes to try, so I need to __________.

答えと使い方を見る
pace myself

最後まで続けられるように、自分の速さや力の使い方を調整すること。

Control your speed or effort so you can keep going.

There are five dishes to try, so I need to pace myself.

五つ料理を試すので、自分のペースを調整する必要があります。

need toの後はpaceです。Iにはmyself、youにはyourselfを使います。ここでは自分のペースを調整する意味で、部屋を歩き回る意味ではありません。

Use pace after need to. Myself matches I; with you, say pace yourself. This expression is about managing your own pace, not walking back and forth in a room.

Watered down:感想と事実を区別するWatered down: describe your impression carefully

5:14〜5:27では味が薄いと感じ、受け取ったばかりだと説明します。一行は感想、次の行は考えられる理由の一つを除いているので、続けて聞きます。

At 5:14–5:27, Sydney says the coffee tastes diluted and explains that she has just received it. Those lines belong together: they tell you what she notices and which possible explanation she is setting aside.

It tastes watered down.は、水を加えるところを見たと断定せずに使えます。自分のレビューでも、味の印象か実際に見た事実かを分けましょう。ジュースやスープでも練習できます。

You can say It tastes watered down without claiming you saw someone add water. That distinction is useful when writing your own review. Change the example to juice or soup, but make clear whether you are reporting a taste or something you actually observed.

状況から英語を思い出す

ジュースがいつもより薄く、水を足したような味がします。

The juice tastes much weaker than usual, as though someone added extra water.

The juice tastes __________.

答えと使い方を見る
watered down

薄められた、または薄めたように感じる味。

Weaker in flavour because it is diluted, or tasting that way.

The juice tastes watered down.

このジュースは薄めたような味がします。

tastesの後で飲み物の状態を述べます。感想であって、作り方の証明ではありません。water downには内容を弱める意味もありますが、この場面は味です。

After tastes, watered down describes the drink. It can express your impression without proving how the drink was made. Water down can also mean weakening an idea, but this scene concerns flavour.

A hint of:ほのかな風味を伝えるA hint of: name a subtle flavour

11:42では少しナッツのような味を言葉にしようとしています。言いよどみも自然な発話の一部です。字幕の中断を全部まねず、役立つ表現を取り出しましょう。

At 11:42, Sydney searches for a word that describes a slight nutty quality. The hesitation is part of ordinary speech. You can learn the useful phrase without copying every interruption in the caption.

a hint of lemonは、レモンを感じるが主役ではないことを伝えます。正確なレシピを表すわけではありません。身近な食べ物に置き換え、ofの後にほのかな風味を入れましょう。

A hint of lemon tells a listener that lemon is noticeable but not dominant. It does not tell you the exact recipe. Try describing a familiar food: keep the food as the subject and choose one small flavour after of. The cake example below is written for practice.

状況から英語を思い出す

主にバニラの味がするケーキに、わずかにレモンの風味を感じます。

The cake is mostly vanilla-flavoured, but you notice a small trace of lemon.

There is __________ lemon in this cake.

答えと使い方を見る
a hint of

わずかに感じ取れる風味や特徴。

A small, noticeable amount of a flavour or quality.

There is a hint of lemon in this cake.

このケーキにはほのかにレモンの風味があります。

aとofを含めて使います。ofの後に風味を置きます。強いレモン味より弱いニュアンスですが、数値の量を表す単位ではありません。

Keep a and of in the full phrase. Lemon supplies the flavour after of. A hint of is lighter than a strong lemon flavour, but it is not a numerical measurement.

Close second:同点ではない僅差を伝えるClose second: compare without calling it a tie

12:12では一番好きな店のすぐ次に位置づけています。発言のreallyが差の小ささを強めます。自分の文ではa close secondという基本の形で使えます。

At 12:12, the phrase puts one café just behind her favourite. Notice the extra word really in the source: it makes the gap sound especially small. You can use the simpler a close second in your own sentence.

マグ、映画、デザートに置き換え、一位を言ってから僅差の二位を伝えます。練習文にはaがあるので、空欄だけでなく文全体を見ましょう。

Change cafés to mugs, films or desserts. Give your favourite first, then name the nearly equal choice. The exercise already supplies a, so check the whole sentence before filling the blank. Learning the phrase includes noticing what is already there.

状況から英語を思い出す

青いマグが少しだけ好きですが、緑もほぼ同じくらい良く、すぐ次の順位です。

You slightly prefer the blue mug, but the green one is almost as good and ranks just behind it.

The blue mug is my favourite; the green one is a __________.

答えと使い方を見る
close second

一位との差がわずかな二位。

Second in a ranking, with only a small gap from first.

The blue mug is my favourite; the green one is a close second.

青いマグが一番好きで、緑のマグは僅差の二位です。

文にaがあるのでclose secondだけを入れます。closeは評価の差で、物理的な距離ではありません。同率一位ならtied for firstなどを使います。

The article a is already in the sentence, so fill only close second. Close describes the small gap, not physical distance. For a tie, say they are tied for first instead.

好みの理由を伝える感想にするMake a review that explains a preference

知っている飲み物や食べ物を選び、濃さ、わずかな風味、別の選択との比較を話します。経験に合わない表現は使わなくて構いません。毎回四つ全部を入れる必要はありません。

Choose one drink or food you know. Describe its strength, name a small flavour if you notice one, then compare it with another choice. Leave out any phrase that does not match your experience; you do not need to force all four into every review.

最後は状況から思い出してから答えを開きます。忘れたら短い部分を聞き直し、例文が合う理由を確認しましょう。時間を置いて別の食べ物で試してください。

In the final review, recall from the situation before opening the answer. If you forget, replay the short passage and read why the example fits. After a break, try a new item instead of repeating only the original coffee story.
