A SpaceX story: from the launch pad to a returning booster

A rocket goes up, and a booster comes back. Linh wants to understand how one flight can lead to another. Follow nine scenes, then use the words to retell the mission.

Linh and her dad watch a short film about SpaceX. An engineer checks the rocket before the flight. Her dad explains that Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002.

The rocket stands on the launch pad. Linh notices its long white body. In this story, it will carry a satellite rather than people.

The countdown begins. Linh counts backwards with the voices in the film: five, four, three, two, one. She leans closer to the screen.

The team is ready to launch the rocket. Fire and smoke appear below it, and it rises from the pad. Linh follows the bright flame with her finger.

The booster separates from the upper stage. The upper stage continues the mission. Linh learns that the lower part can return instead of travelling all the way with the satellite.

The film shows what the rocket carries. A satellite is travelling above Earth. Its blue solar panels look like wings, but it is not an aeroplane.

The satellite is in orbit around Earth. Her dad traces a curved path on the screen. Linh realises that reaching space and moving around Earth are not the same idea.

The film switches back to the returning booster. It is ready to land on the pad. Linh holds her breath as its legs reach the surface.

The team can reuse the booster after checks and preparation. Linh draws an arrow back to the start of her notes. The next flight feels like the next chapter of the story.

engineer/ˌendʒɪˈnɪə(r)/

Engineer names a technical professional. Learn an aerospace engineer, with an before the initial vowel sound. A flight depends on a team as well as its founder.

The engineer checks the rocket before the flight.
