You are thinking about breakfast, leaving home and ordering a drink. These ordinary moments need different kinds of English: a thought that stays with you, a plan becoming an action, and a polite request.

a cozy fall day in new yorkでは、Sydney Serenaが一人で街を楽しみます。

In a cozy fall day in new york, Sydney Serena spends a day by herself in the city. Start with the three short passages at 2:20, 3:36 and 4:38. Listen for what she is doing before reading each note. The note-card examples are new practice sentences, separate from her words.

On my mind: remember the thought, not just the food

At 2:20, Sydney connects the bread with a thought that started the night before. Listen once and ask yourself: what has she been thinking about, and for how long? Those details explain why a continuing-thought expression fits.

Do not automatically translate the expression as being worried. The breakfast scene is excited and positive. In another situation a problem could be on your mind, but the surrounding story supplies the emotional meaning. Try replacing bread with an idea for dinner, a trip or an unfinished task.

You found an interesting recipe and keep thinking about making it throughout the day.

That new recipe has been __________ all day.

on my mind

Something you keep thinking about.

That new recipe has been on my mind all day.

Has been agrees with the singular subject recipe. On my mind describes the continuing thought; it does not specify whether the thought is happy or anxious. Change my to your when talking about the other person.

Heading out: say what is about to happen

At 3:36, she is still introducing what she is wearing, but she announces that she is leaving for the day. This is a useful doorway sentence: it tells someone that you are going out now, rather than describing a general habit.

I go to the café every Sunday. I’m heading out to the café now.

Compare I go to the café every Sunday with I’m heading out to the café now. The first describes a routine; the second updates the listener about this moment. Keep the destination in your note so that you can make a complete sentence when you practise.

You are at the door with your bag and tell a friend you are leaving for the café now.

I'm __________ to the café now.

heading out

Leaving or about to leave a place.

I'm heading out to the café now.

Use heading after am in this sentence. To names the destination. Head out can describe leaving without naming a destination; it does not mean moving your head.

Could I have: turn a menu item into a request

At 4:38, the purpose is simple: ask for one drink. Listen for the question frame before trying to catch every part of the seasonal drink name. The same frame is useful even when the café menu changes.

For your own practice, change only the item: a glass of water, a menu, or the bill. Say the complete question with please, then try it without looking. The blank below tests the request frame, not your memory for the original latte.

At a café, you politely ask the server for a glass of water.

__________ a glass of water, please?

Could I have

A polite way to request something.

Could I have a glass of water, please?

Could makes the request polite here; it does not place the order in the past. Put the item after have. This reusable request also works for a menu or a receipt.

Retell the day in three different jobs

First name something you keep thinking about. Next tell a friend where you are leaving for. Finally ask politely for something at your destination. You are reusing the functions from the vlog while changing the details to fit your life.

The final review repeats all three situations. Try each blank before revealing the explanation, then return after a break. If the sounds are still hard to recognise, use the subtitle guide to check the gap between what you can read and what you can hear.
