日常の話から、必要なものがなくなること、目に見える状態、行動を迷った理由を伝える英語が学べます。今回はEnglish with Evieの春のVlogの一部を再び使います。
An everyday story can give you language for three very different jobs: explaining a missing supply, describing what you see and saying why you felt unsure. This lesson revisits selected moments from English with Evie’s spring vlog.
各時刻の動画を聞いてから解説を読みましょう。元の英語は動画パネルで確認できます。練習文はMemiの新しい例文なので、元の話以外にも型を応用してみましょう。
Listen at each timestamp before reading the explanation. The English source lines stay in the video panel. The practice sentences below are new Memi examples, so try using the pattern beyond the original story.
run out of:必要なものが尽きるRun out of: when a supply is gone
Evieはスマホでの撮影中、保存容量がなくなることがあったと話します。ofの後に足りなくなるものを置き、まとまりで覚えましょう。storage・coffee・timeなど、状況に合うものを選べます。
Evie sometimes had no storage left when she used her phone to film. Learn the whole phrase with the resource after of. It works with storage, coffee or time; choose a resource that fits the situation.
新しいコーヒーの例ではmightが可能性を表すので、動詞は原形です。何がなくなるのかを述べ、その時点や困る理由を加えてみましょう。
In the new coffee example, might makes the problem a possibility. The phrase stays in its base form. Say what could become unavailable, then add when or why it matters.
来客の予定がありますが、コーヒーが少ししか残っていません。到着前に使い切ってしまいそうです。
Guests are coming, and only a small amount of coffee is left. You are worried there will be none left before they arrive.
We might __________ coffee before the guests arrive.
答えと使い方を見る
必要なものを使い切り、残りがなくなる。
Have none of a supply left.
We might run out of coffee before the guests arrive.
お客さんが来る前にコーヒーがなくなるかもしれません。
mightの後は原形runです。なくなるものの前にofを残します。run out of coffeeはコーヒーが尽きること、run out of a roomは部屋から走り出ることです。
After might, use the base form run. Keep of before the supply. Running out of coffee describes the coffee becoming unavailable; running out of a room describes leaving a place.
covered in:表面の状態を伝えるCovered in: describe a surface
散歩中、Evieは石垣の苔を指します。この表現は石垣の状態を述べています。泥道を歩いた後の靴にも応用でき、主語が変わっても表面を説明する型は同じです。
On the walk, Evie points out moss on a wall. The phrase describes the wall’s state. Transfer it to shoes after a muddy walk: the subject changes, but the surface description still works.
練習文ではcovered with mudも自然なので正解になります。答えを確認したら、文全体を読みましょう。複数のshoesにはwereを使い、覆っている物質を前置詞の後に置きます。
Covered with mud is also natural in the practice sentence, and the exercise accepts it. Read the whole sentence after checking: the plural subject shoes goes with were, and the substance follows the preposition.
ぬれた道を歩いて、靴の外側に泥がたくさん付いています。
You walked along a wet path. Now there is mud all over the outside of your shoes.
After the walk, my shoes were __________ mud.
答えと使い方を見る
表面に物質などが広がり、覆われている。
Have a substance spread over a surface.
After the walk, my shoes were covered in mud.
散歩の後、靴は泥だらけでした。
複数のshoesにwereが対応します。coveredは状態を表します。この例ではcovered with mudも自然です。前置詞を含むまとまりで覚えましょう。
Were agrees with the plural shoes; covered describes their state. Covered with also works with mud in this example. Keep the whole preposition phrase together.
hesitant to:行動をためらう気持ちHesitant to: explain a moment of uncertainty
後半では、催しに来た人を撮影するのをためらったと説明します。前後の話から、相手が動画に映りたいか分からなかったことが理由だと分かります。選んだ字幕はその理由の前で終わっています。
Later, Evie explains that she was unsure about filming other people at the village event. Her reason comes in the surrounding source: she did not know whether they wanted to appear. The selected caption ends before that explanation.
hesitant toには、するか迷う行動を続けます。会議の例ではtoの後がaskです。気持ちを述べる表現なので、この語句だけでは結局質問したかどうかは分かりません。
Use hesitant to with an action you felt unsure about. In the meeting example, ask follows to. The phrase describes a feeling, so it does not tell us by itself whether the person eventually asked the question.
会議で質問したいのですが、話を遮ってよいか迷っています。
You wanted to ask a question at a meeting but were unsure whether to interrupt.
I was __________ ask a question during the meeting.
答えと使い方を見る
何かをするのをためらう、迷う。
Unsure or reluctant about doing something.
I was hesitant to ask a question during the meeting.
会議中に質問するのをためらっていました。
wasは過去の気持ちを示します。toの後は原形askです。hesitantだけでは、拒否したことや結局行動しなかったことまでは決まりません。
Was places the feeling in the past. To is followed by the base verb ask. Hesitant describes uncertainty; it does not by itself mean that you refused or never acted.
最後の復習を開く前に、使い切りそうなもの、表面の状態、迷った行動について一文ずつ言いましょう。その後で型を確認し、元の場面を聞き直してください。
Before opening the final review, say one sentence about a supply you might use up, one about a surface and one about an action you felt unsure about. Then check the patterns and replay the source moments.
