1:06〜1:33のコーヒーの場面から始め、次の文ボタンで6:54〜7:01の料理の場面へ進みましょう。

甘すぎるコーヒー。作るのに一時間かかる夕食。身近な二つの困り事が、「量が多すぎる」「解決方法を考えたい」と英語で伝えるきっかけになります。

A coffee that is far too sweet. A dinner that takes an hour to cook. These two everyday problems give you clear reasons to use English: to say that there is more of something than you need, and to say that you need to find a solution.

a week in my life vlogでは、Sydney Serenaが日常の出来事を自然な英語で話します。二つの短い場面を聞き、状況を理解してから、自分のことを話す練習をしましょう。動画の画像でプレーヤーを開き、メモの時刻を押すとその場面に戻れます。

In a week in my life vlog, Sydney Serena tells everyday stories in conversational English. This lesson uses two short passages to move from listening and understanding the situation to recalling a phrase and talking about your own life. Tap the video image to open the listening player, or tap a timestamp on a note to return to that passage.

一語ずつ読む前に、何が起きたかをつかむUnderstand the situation before reading every word

1:06〜1:33では、SydneyがLizのアイデアを振り返ります。Sydneyのコーヒーは甘すぎ、Lizはまだ注文していませんでした。甘味料なしのコーヒーを加えて混ぜ、味を調整しました。カフェでの出来事を後から話している場面です。

At 1:06–1:33, Sydney describes Liz’s idea: Sydney’s coffee was too sweet, and Liz had not ordered a drink yet. They added coffee without sweetener and combined the two to balance the taste. Sydney is retelling what happened during their coffee outing.

6:54〜7:01では、料理に時間がかかることを話しています。もっと短時間で作る方法を考えたいと言い、翌日の分も用意しています。

At 6:54–7:01, Sydney is talking about how much time cooking takes. She wants to find a quicker way to do it and has also made a portion for tomorrow.

最初は「問題は何か、話し手はどうしたいのか」を考えましょう。日本語で状況をつかむと、英語表現を聞き直す足場になります。英語はYouTubeの字幕、日越の訳はMemiによるものです。時刻は秒単位の目安で、字幕の区切りが文意の途中に来ることもあります。

On your first listen, just ask: What is the problem, and what does the speaker want to do about it? Understanding it in Japanese gives you a starting point for listening again to the English phrase. The transcript excerpts come from YouTube, with Vietnamese and Japanese translations by Memi. Timestamps are rounded to seconds, and a caption boundary may fall in the middle of an idea.

Too much:必要な量を超えたときToo much: when there is more than you need

コーヒーの話でway too much vanillaを聞いてみましょう。too muchは適量を超えていることを表し、wayはその程度を強めます。この場面の適量とは、飲む人にとっておいしい量です。

In the coffee story, listen for way too much vanilla. Too much means that the amount exceeds what is suitable, while way makes that meaning stronger. The situation tells you that “suitable” means a taste the person drinking it enjoys.

This drink is too sweetとThere is too much sugar in this drinkを比べましょう。前者はtoo+形容詞で味を、後者はtoo much+不可算名詞で量を述べます。too much salt、too much time、too much noiseにも応用できます。

Compare This drink is too sweet with There is too much sugar in this drink. The first sentence describes taste using too + adjective. The second describes an amount using too much + uncountable noun. In other situations, you can use too much salt, too much time or too much noise.

状況から英語を思い出す

スープを味見すると、料理に必要な量より塩が多く入っていました。

You taste the soup and notice that the cook added more salt than it needs.

There is __________ salt in the soup.

答えと使い方を見る
too much

状況に合う量を超えて多いこと。

More than is suitable for the situation.

There is too much salt in the soup.

スープに塩が多すぎます。

saltは不可算名詞なのでtoo muchを使います。味を述べるならThe soup is too salty.とも言えます。

Salt is an uncountable noun, so use too much. To describe the taste instead, you can also say The soup is too salty.

Mix them together:動作と対象を一緒に覚えるMix them together: remember the action and the things involved

1:15〜1:33を聞き、themが何を指すか確かめましょう。ここでは二つのコーヒーです。mixの訳語だけを覚えると、文を意味のあるものにしているつながりが抜けてしまいます。

Listen again at 1:15–1:33 and notice what them refers to. Here, it means the two portions of coffee. If you only save the isolated verb mix, you lose the connection that makes the sentence meaningful.

問題、対象、動作をメモします。片方は甘すぎるコーヒー、もう片方は甘味料なし。それらを混ぜます。次は牛乳とココアに置き換えてみましょう。動作を残して、混ぜる物を変えます。

Keep a note of the problem, the things involved and the action: one coffee is too sweet; there is another coffee without sweetener; the two are combined. Then change the ingredients in a new example to milk and cocoa. You keep the action but change what is being mixed.

Vlogには言いよどみや挿入もあります。1:15、1:22、1:26の字幕を続けて聞きましょう。中心の表現を使うために、すべての言いよどみをまねる必要はありません。

The vlog includes hesitations and interruptions. Listen to the lines at 1:15, 1:22 and 1:26 together. You do not need to copy every hesitation to use the main phrase.

状況から英語を思い出す

牛乳とココアをカップに入れました。相手に二つの材料を混ぜるよう伝えます。

The milk and cocoa are in the cup. Ask the other person to combine the two ingredients.

Put the milk and cocoa in a cup, then __________.

答えと使い方を見る
mix them together

話題の物を混ぜ合わせること。

Combine the things being discussed.

Put the milk and cocoa in a cup, then mix them together.

牛乳とココアをカップに入れ、混ぜ合わせてください。

themはmilk and cocoaの代わりです。mixの訳だけでなく、混ぜる対象も一緒に覚えましょう。

Them stands for milk and cocoa. Remembering the things involved helps you understand the whole phrase instead of only recording the isolated verb mix.

Figure out:プリンターの例から実際の困り事へFigure out: from a printer example to a real problem

YouTubeの単語を覚える記事では、プリンターの使い方を考えるfigure outを練習しました。このVlogの6:54では料理の時間について使われます。

If you have read the guide to remembering vocabulary from YouTube, you have practised figure out when learning to use a printer. At 6:54 in this vlog, the phrase appears as Sydney talks about cooking time.

共通するのは、考えて方法や解決策を見つけることです。この一文で具体的な解決策はまだ示していません。時短のコツをすでに見つけたと決めつけないようにしましょう。

Both situations involve thinking about how to do something or solve a problem. Sydney has not given a specific solution in this line, so do not assume that she has already found a trick for cooking faster.

何をする方法かを示すにはfigure out how to+動作を使います。下のカードはMemiが作った練習文です。動画の問題に近い内容ですが、発言の直接引用ではありません。

To name what you need to find a way to do, use figure out how to + an action. Memi wrote the sentence on the card below to practise that idea. It expresses a problem similar to the one in the video; it is not a direct quote.

メモは短くて構いません。動画名、時刻、状況、自分で作る一文を残します。6:54なら「夕食作りに時間がかかりすぎる。早く作る方法を考えたい」という意図を手がかりにします。

A reusable note can be short: keep the video title, timestamp, situation and one sentence you practise making. For the passage at 6:54, the idea to recall is: “Cooking dinner takes too long. I need to find a way to do it faster.”

Gotchaのfigure outで意味や例文を確認し、その場で練習できます。動画の状況はメモや復習の6:54から聞き直しましょう。Videoページでも同じレッスンを聞いて練習できます。

Open figure out in Gotcha to check its meaning and examples, then practise there directly. To hear the vlog situation again, use 6:54 in the notes or review. You can also open this lesson on the Video page to listen and practise there.

場面の終わりで動画が止まったら、訳を見ずに問題と対応を短く説明しましょう。次に、塩辛すぎる料理、混ぜる材料、方法を考えたい仕事など、自分の出来事に置き換えてみましょう。

When the video pauses at the end of a passage, briefly describe the problem and response without looking at the translation. Then replace one detail with something from your life: food that is too salty, two ingredients to combine, or something you need to find a way to do.
